Duke's Malibu

By: Diane L Divo-Schultheis

This spectacular restaurant is located literally “on” the Pacific Ocean at 21150 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. This is a favorite place for locals and you will understand why after you have experienced it. This is where Hawaii meets California and that is a great combination.

It opened in 1996 and is named after Duke Kahanamoku, the “Grand Daddy” of all surfers and has pictures and memorabilia throughout of him and many other notable surfers. Not only do they have a well-known restaurant here, the connected Barefoot Bar is another local favorite. The atmosphere is tropical and the sound of the water crashing against the rocks is soothing. You feel very comfortable here and can enjoy a great meal with family and friends or just meet for drinks. The best part of all is you can do either of them from inside this beautiful restaurant or outside of it. It is a true paradise no matter where you are.

The Setting

You are surrounded by unbelievable views mixed with the gentle ocean sounds coming from just outside or nearby. The bamboo tables and chairs, the wood floor, the sand under your feet, the ocean, the comfortable seating, all surrounded by beautiful, colorful flowers, ferns, and palms make for an awesome setting to enjoy the day or night. You have many different places to sit for your meal or drinks. It is a great place for large gatherings, but also a very romantic place to share with that someone special.

The Food

They serve the freshest seafood in a wide variety of ways. You can snack on appetizers, salads, and soup or choose from the many beach or island favorites or steaks and prime rib. There are plenty of choices you will have to make, but they all are good.

On Sunday they have a special Brunch Buffet of the  most popular dishes served. The Barefoot Bar has a menu packed full of items and don’t forget about Happy Hour there, when all food and drinks are half price which happens Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 PM.They serve many mixed drinks, tropical beach drinks with umbrellas, beer, sparkling wines and champagnes, and have a large selection of white and red wines. They have a drink for everyone.

Restaurant Information

They are open Monday 3:30 PM to 10 PM, Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 AM to 10 PM, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM to 11 PM, and Sunday from 11:30 AM to 9 PM. You can reach them at 310-317-0777.

If you would like to escape to a tropical paradise for a few hours and maybe kick off your shoes and run your feet through the sand as you enjoy the scenery, this is a place you can do it.
